Right-Wing Extremism: German neo-Nazis at SS commemoration march in Budapest
A few thousand people took part in a commemorative march in the Buda Hills during the night of February 8–9, 2020.
The 60-kilometre-long “escape” march refers to the Battle of Budapest in the winter of 1944/45. Hundreds of participants wore Nazi uniforms, badges and weapons. Checkpoints where stamps were distributed were decorated with swastikas, insignia of the SS and portraits of Hitler. As in Germany, the display of these symbols is generally punishable by law in Hungary. According to the organizers, these only serve to illustrate history and are not punishable as a historical representation.Among the participants were several groups of organized German neo-Nazis. Organized neo-Nazi groups from Europe had already participated in previous years.
