RECORD – Research and Documentation on Contemporary Holocaust Distortion

The RECORD project (Research and Documentation on Contemporary Holocaust Distortion) addresses contemporary forms of Holocaust distortion, which fuels antisemitism and erodes democratic values. The Project also examines how misogyny and racism intersect with antisemitism within extremist milieus.

Holocaust denial, distortion, and glorification are longstanding challenges across European Union Member States and have traditionally been promoted by neo-Nazi and other right-wing extremist groups. In recent years, these phenomena have been amplified by successive crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, and the war and widespread destruction that followed.

Led by democ e. V., World Jewish Congress (WJC) and B’nai B’rith International, the RECORD consortium brings together a wide range of stakeholders to address Holocaust distortion collectively and strengthen the resilience of European societies against this phenomenon.

The project comprises a broad range of activities designed to engage relevant stakeholders, enable them to share their experiences and expertise, explore new methodologies, and jointly develop effective responses. These activities take into account the diverse national contexts, challenges, and opportunities across EU Member States. RECORD’s target groups include civil society organisations, Jewish communities, journalists, policymakers, and law enforcement agencies. By fostering cooperation, mutual understanding, and awareness of different perspectives, the project aims to support more coordinated and effective responses to Holocaust distortion.

RECORD’s activities include four regional workshops covering Northern Europe, the Baltic States, Central Europe, and Southern Europe; three thematic reports accompanied by three webinars; six interactive briefings for policymakers and law enforcement agencies; and a final conference bringing together the knowledge, experiences, and insights gathered throughout the project. In addition, the project will produce and disseminate a substantial collection of video documentation illustrating contemporary manifestations of Holocaust distortion in various EU Member States.
