MAAP – Monitoring and Analysis of Antisemitic Protest Dynamics
Recent social and political crises have fundamentally changed the nature of protest. Public gatherings and demonstrations have seen a worrying rise in the presence of antisemitic actors, narratives and dynamics. In these settings, antisemitism does not always show itself overtly; it is often subtle, concealed in codes, symbols or indirect references that are difficult to recognise and document systematically. These complex manifestations occur across very different movements, including left-wing, right-wing and Islamist groups.
Public authorities, policymakers and civil society organisations often lack the robust qualitative analyses needed to adequately assess these developments and take appropriate action. In the rapidly changing protest landscape, it is essential to identify and analyse antisemitic tendencies at an early stage. Moreover, civil society reporting centres face new challenges in documenting incidents amid growing security risks and rapidly evolving protest movements.
This is where MAAP (Monitoring and Analysis of Antisemitic Protest Dynamics) comes in. Democ conducts comprehensive multimedia monitoring of gatherings at which antisemitic actors appear or antisemitic content is disseminated. The aim is to provide well-founded knowledge that helps not only to document antisemitic incidents but also to understand their structures and dynamics.
As part of the project, democ produces short videos based on its findings for a broad social media audience. Regular reports also provide specialist audiences, public authorities and policymakers with a well-founded overview of current developments and challenges in this field. In addition, the Federal Association of Departments for Research and Information on Antisemitism (RIAS) and its local reporting centres receive targeted training and support in documenting antisemitic incidents at public gatherings, strengthening their capacity and specialist expertise.
